Review

Experts and researchers have long concluded that cooking food at home will one day become as much of an anachronism as tailoring your own clothes or even repairing your car. For those born just before we hit the second millennium, a quick breakfast of a cup of tea or coffee and – at best – a jam sandwich is often the pinnacle of culinary excellence. The rest of the food is ordered online.

I still remember ordering ready-made meals only by calling the local restaurant directly and having their delivery worker bring it to your doorstep. A friendly, personalized way – yes, but by no means was it super-convenient, especially in big cities like London, where several thousand diners, bars, cafes, and restaurants offer takeaway and home delivery 24/7.

Get Your Favorite Food Delivered to You in Minutes!

Today, there is a smartphone app for virtually anything, and I am willing to bet that a food delivery app was among the first to be invented.

British are among the biggest fans of takeaways and restaurant delivery, with the food delivery market in this country estimated at $3.3 billion. It is, therefore, no wonder that they have some of the best apps for having a quick and easy meal delivered to you any time of day or night. Until recently, UberEats and Just Eat were the ones I favored the most, but that was before I discovered Deliveroo. It is easy, stylish, and fun to use and offers of gastronomic options in the neighborhood, covering everything from fast food to the most sophisticated restaurants in town.

Deliveroo: What Is All The Fuss and Fun About?

Deliveroo is a London-based food delivery company founded almost a decade ago and operating under the motto of “proper food, proper delivery.” I think that slogan clearly shows how this service seeks to stand out from the competition. Unlike UberEats (previously, my favorite go-to food delivery app), Deliveroo offers higher food quality and partners with a broader range of premium segment restaurants. Make no mistake: there is a ton of unhealthy and tasty junk food options here, but – at least in my area – it also spans an impressive selection of top-tier establishments for when you want something fancier than pizza, burgers, or Doner kebab.

All Deliveroo food is always fresh; at least, I have not had a single reason to complain about its quality in my nearly four years of using the app. Ordering during peak times sometimes results in longer-than-expected waiting periods, but their estimated delivery time is mostly accurate. From experience, ETA in Deliveroo mostly depends on what transport the couriers are using, so if you are in a rush, you might want to mention this when placing an order.

The app itself is nice: well-made, intuitive to use, with lots of helpful options and features like a 'late night' filter that comes in mega-handy when you are on your way home late in the evening and know there is an empty fridge waiting for you. Plenty of high-quality food pics, not as many as on UberEats, but still enough to give you a good idea of what that new meal you want to try will look like.

Deliveroo - Your Food, Delivered

The two things I wish they would work on regarding the app and the service, in general, are real-time order tracking and customer support. Following the delivery progress in the app does not seem as easy as it once was, with the driver’s icon freezing and popping in and out of the picture at its convenience. The latter has to do with how they choose to solve issues nowadays. I feel that they have let their standards downgrade somewhat: when there is a problem, you will most likely get an apology email, not a refund as before.

Pros:

  • The app looks good and is easy to use: simple registration and easy to place an order.
  • The delivery is quick, and ETA is almost always accurate.
  • Changing order details after you have submitted your order is allowed.
  • Advanced filtering with a handy ‘late night’ filter.
  • Good-quality food, always fresh; plenty of premium options.

Cons:

  • Delivery progress is hard to track and freezes a lot.
  • Customer service is friendly but not very helpful when a refund is due.
  • The app does not have enough meal images.

Deliveroo – Because Who Doesn’t Love Amazing Food?

So, next time you don’t feel like cooking at home, do not hesitate to download and use Deliveroo to order fantastic meals at a reasonable price. With this great-looking, well-functioning app, you are guaranteed to enjoy the experience throughout!
