One of the most promising Sega’s upcoming projects called Yakuza: Like a Dragon is going to be released in a couple of weeks (at least in Japan), and the developers have released a new trailer to show more gameplay features to their audience. Since the upcoming release is limited to Japan, the trailer is in Japanese, but even if you don’t speak it, you can admire the combat style and new animations.
New Features
In the trailer, the characters led by Ichiban Kasuga fight different enemies in turn-based combat. This feature seems to be the most innovative thing that sets this new game apart from previous installments of the Yakuza series. It won’t take place in Kamurocho, but there are many things that will remind true fans about other games of the series, such as mini-games that still allow you to earn some additional cash.
Doing main quests is still the most important part of the game, but there are lots of alternative ways you can enjoy it, and some of the most interesting of them are random fights. The Yakuza series is famous for its fights that are a little too dramatic, and the trailer makes it completely clear that you’ll find such over-the-top brawls in this game, too. And there are some new animations, as you can see.
Release Details
Yakuza: Like a Dragon was initially known as Yakuza 7 and was announced in September. It follows the main story of the series and continues Judgement, a spin-off to the series that took place in Kamurocho. However, the main hero of the story was different, and there was no turn-based combat there, so it really feels fresh and innovative. It seems that Sega wants to liven the series up a little bit.
Sometimes it feels like the entire franchise is being kind of restarted with a couple of unique features that were never used in the previous games. It seems that this reworked game is meant to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Yakuza series, so Sega has probably decided to give its true fans something new to try. The game is going to take place in the accurate virtual copy of Ijincho in Yokohama, and players will have access to the unknown side of Japan.
While the trailer is in Japanese, it’s perfectly clear that the developers aim to attract a much broader audience, allowing western fans of the series to have fun, too. One of the facts that support this opinion is the reworked combat system – it is much more structured now. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is going to be released on PlayStation 4 on January 16th, but the date of a western release has not been announced yet.
