The all-powerful lizard of the deep is getting ready to make another grand entrance, and this time in a special black-and-white version that the creators have named Godzilla Minus One/Minus Colour.
The monochromatic version of the film will premiere on Netflix on August 1. Takashi Yamazaki, who directed the Japanese hit, has worked hard with his team on this new release. Rather than simply converting the film to black-and-white, they made adjustments on a cut-by-cut basis, as if creating a new movie. This approach aimed to achieve a style reminiscent of the work by masters of monochrome photography.
The team was able to discover skin texture and landscape details that were hidden in the raw data. With these adjustments, a more frightening Godzilla emerged, much like one you'd expect to see in a documentary. By eliminating color, a new sense of reality emerged, inviting viewers to experience and confront this fear afresh at the theater.
For those interested in owning the film in a physical format, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Colour will also be included in the upcoming 4K release.
