The sheer size of some Baldur's Gate 3 save files has caused the game to crash for a number of players.
Given the vastness of Baldur's Gate 3, which includes abundant content, extensive lore, and countless RPG elements, large save files are expected. The game's developers have even hinted at "17,000" possible game conclusions.
However, the astronomical size of some save files has created issues, causing Baldur’s Gate 3 to crash for several gamers.
The developers noted, “A plethora of activities undertaken by players in Baldur’s Gate 3 led to the expansion of personal ‘story’ databases (which store players' choices and actions), which have grown disproportionally large."
The response by Baldur’s Gate 3 developers has been to remove any restrictions on save file size. Practically, this means that a saved file is only limited by the storage capacity of a player's system. This modification was made to accommodate and store “the enumerable actions you’re all undertaking during your adventures.”
As a preventive measure, Hotfix 2.1 has been launched on Steam and GOG platforms, reestablishing Larian's Cloud save games feature. This handy tool allows players to download a saved file from the cloud if it becomes corrupted or causes the game to crash.
To facilitate cross-play as the game prepares for its PlayStation 5 release, cross-saves will be reactivated from August 10, 2023. Here's a quick overview of the various modifications that accompany the Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix 2.1:
• A resolution has been implemented for issues related to oversized save games.
• Larian's Cloud savegames feature has been reinitiated.
• To avoid potential hiccups and glitches, players are encouraged to update their game promptly. This update will help mitigate a number of potential issues.
